New virus spreads fast

New virus spreads rapidly, sparking concern across species. Colorado State University (CSU) is helping track a dangerous rise in bird flu cases — not just in livestock, but in household cats.

H5N1, the strain of the new virus, has caused serious illness and multiple feline deaths. The virus, once limited to poultry and dairy farms, has now reached urban areas and residential homes.

“We are doing the testing in our biosafety level three laboratory,” said Kristy Pabilonia, Executive Director of CSU’s Veterinary Diagnostic Labs.

Pet Cats Facing Fatal Illness

Cats infected with bird flu are showing neurological symptoms, including an inability to walk. CSU experts warn the majority of infected cats are dying.

“That is concerning because we have been seeing very severe clinical illness in people’s pet cats,” Pabilonia explained.

Initially, only farm cats were infected. Now, cases are popping up in cities. Researchers say cats often catch the virus from:

  • Wild birds
  • Raw milk
  • Raw pet food
  • Infected animals

From Farms to Urban Streets

Pet owners are urged to avoid feeding raw milk or uncooked meats. It’s also advised to keep cats indoors to limit exposure to wildlife.

“Most of the cats we are seeing have exposure to wild birds or raw pet food,” Pabilonia said.

The virus has even been found in products sold in stores.

Human Risk Still Low — But That Could Change

In Colorado, 10 human cases of bird flu have been reported since 2024. One case in February and a fatal case in Louisiana in January raised concerns.

“We know this virus can transmit to people,” Pabilonia warned.
“Although human infections have been rare, that is a possibility.”

While the CDC says the risk to humans is still low, virologists warn the bird flu could become the cause of a new pandemic in 2025.

This situation underscores the reality that a new virus 2025 could quickly evolve into the new pandemic 2025 if not taken seriously.

Experts Urge Swift Action

CSU is working with health officials across multiple states to better understand this new virus and its potential impact.

The message is clear: if ignored, the pandemic new virus threat could become much worse.
