Thousands of users across the U.S. were affected by a Zoom outage Wednesday afternoon, temporarily halting virtual meetings and locking out access to the Zoom.us website.
According to DownDetector, disruptions peaked just after 3 p.m. ET on April 16, 2025.Zoom outage reports jumped over 60,000, but by 4:43 p.m., they had fallen to less than 10,000, indicating a slow return to normal.
Zoom: What Happened?
Many users couldn’t even load the Zoom webpage during the outage, never alone join their booked Zoom meetings. A spokesperson confirmed via email that “some users are experiencing an outage” but did not cite a cause.
By 4:52 p.m. ET, Zoom’s status account on X announced that service had been restored.
“We have resolved the issue impacting users. Thank you for your patience.” – @Zoom
User Reactions: Some Laugh, Others Stress
As with most internet outages, the reaction on social media was swift and meme-worthy.
One remote worker wrote:
“Shoutout to Zoom for being down when I really didn’t want to go to a 4pm meeting.”
Another posted:
“Zoom is down. No more work today.”
While many joked, others expressed frustration, especially those relying on Zoom for work or school.
Other Tech Issues Today
Interestingly, Zoom wasn’t the only major platform facing problems. Spotify also reported issues earlier in the day, with some users unable to stream music. The music service confirmed it resolved the issue by mid-afternoon.
Zoom Status: Back Online, But No Explanation Yet
Though Zoom.us is now back online, users are still waiting for a full explanation. As of now, no clear cause has been shared.
The platform remains one of the top choices for virtual meetings, team collaboration, and webinars—making even short-term outages significant for professionals across industries.
