FDA Issues Warning Over Contaminated Cucumbers
Cucumber recall 2025 salmonella outbreak prompts national recall to protect public health. The FDA has linked the bacteria to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers in Florida and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales.
Between April 29 and May 19, suppliers shipped cucumbers to restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers across the U.S.
15 States Report Salmonella Cases
As of May 21, the CDC confirmed 26 cases of Salmonella Montevideo, with nine hospitalizations. Cases were reported in:
- Alabama
- California
- Colorado
- Florida
- Illinois
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Michigan
- North Carolina
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
The FDA collected samples from Bedner Growers that matched the outbreak strain.
How to Know If You’re at Risk
The FDA warns the cucumbers may not be labeled. They could have been sold individually or in small, unmarked packages.
“If you cannot tell if your cucumber was grown by Bedner Growers, throw it away,” the FDA advised.
Restaurants and retailers are also being urged to sanitize bins, counters, and equipment.
Symptoms of Salmonella
Salmonella affects the intestines. Symptoms typically begin 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Watch for:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Fever
- Vomiting
Most people recover in 4 to 7 days, but dehydration can require medical help.
Where Were These Cucumbers Sold?
Nationwide stores and Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market locations sold the affected cucumbers in:
- Boynton Beach, FL
- Delray Beach, FL
- West Palm Beach, FL
Bedner Growers said they’ve removed all possibly contaminated cucumbers from their markets.
What You Should Do Now
- Check your fridge. If unsure, throw the cucumbers away.
- Ask restaurants if their cucumbers came from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce.
- Clean and sanitize any surfaces cucumbers may have touched.
Why This Matters
Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., especially in summer. Cucumbers have caused outbreaks before.
In June 2024, more than 550 people got sick from tainted cucumbers. That outbreak also traced back to Bedner Growers.
Food Safety Tips from the CDC
- Wash hands and surfaces often
- Rinse produce under running water
- Keep raw meats separate from produce
- Refrigerate perishables quickly
- Thaw food in the fridge, not on counters
Avoid soaking or using soap on produce. Peeling cucumbers may reduce risk but is not a guaranteed fix.
